The cold weather of North Dakota is here. Some areas will be experiencing an Extreme Cold Watch tomorrow (-40!!). As responsible guardians for our animals, we need to insure that their safety, well-being and health are kept in mind during the winter months. In other words, don't be a creep!

The ASPCA offers a great list of cold weather tips on their web site. Tips include:

Keep your cats INSIDE.
Don't leave your pets in your car.
Use pet friendly ice melt.

Jingle, Tux and Gracie in Jamestown

The Jamestown Police Department Animal Impound currently has three stray cats. They are on borrowed time and need to find homes soon. If you, or someone you know, living in the Jamestown area is planning on getting a cat please consider visiting the impound. Tux is a male neutered Black and White (tuxedo) cat that is a stray at the pound. He is on a limited stay basis and will need his owners to come get him or an adopter to come rescue him.

Jingle is a female Kitten only about 5 months old. She was found as a stray and will need her owners to come get her or to have someone adopt her as she is on a limited stay basis at the pound.

Gracie is a female grey adult cat that came to the pound as a stray. She looks like she may have been nursing kittens not to long ago. Gracie is on a limited stay basis and will need her owner to come find her soon or to find a new adoptive home.

Originally, I was adopted out through the FM Humane Society when I was younger and got returned because my owner could no longer keep me. I have lived with older children, so I would love to find another family to adopt me. Everyone here at the shelter tells me how sweet and well-behaved I am. I love to go for long walks if you’d take me, and my favorite game is fetch (and keep away, but I’ll give the ball back eventually!). My foster dad used to take me to the lakes in the summertime, and I discovered that I love water! I’m not a big fan of those furry little creatures you call ‘cats,’ but I’d make a wonderful solo companion. Puppy for Christmas!

Here we go again...because people just don't get it. "Going shopping to get my daughter a puppy for Christmas!" Isn't that cute? No, not at all. Let me tell you why. Puppies should never be a surprise. The family should do research on the best type of dog (personality, size, energy level) who will fit the family's lifestyle. Do you want a puppy or an adult dog? You also have to consider the amount of time you can spend with the dog. The amount of money needed for vaccinations, food and all of the other expenses that come with bringing a pet into your family. Dogs at pet stores generally come from puppy mills. The puppy mills know that people will be buying puppies for Christmas so the mother dogs are forced to work overtime to meet the demand. Do you really want to be a part of this?

You know what would be a great gift for your children for Christmas in lieu of getting a puppy? Make a monetary donation or purchase items on your local shelter's wish list. Take the children to the shelter to see all of the unwanted animals and have a shelter worker tell them about the time, money and effort it takes to care for them. This also teaches the kids to be socially responsible.

Thanksgiving Treats for Pets

Animal Planet offers a few suggestions for Thanksgiving treats for pets.

Examples include:

Fruits and Veggies. A great treat for the little pets like hamsters and gerbils. Dogs and cats may also enjoy cooked veggies like potatoes, carrot and pumpkin.

Bones and Chews. Don't give your dogs turkey bones! They break easily and can splinter. If you want to give your pooch a bone make sure you get something store-bought.

Horses and Cows Shot, Killed in Griggs County, ND

HANNAFORD, N.D. (AP) — Sheriff Bob Hook says someone has been shooting livestock in eastern North Dakota's Griggs County.

Hook tells KFGO radio that the latest targets were four horses at a farm east of Hannaford. He says all four animals died of head shots. They were found Thursday afternoon.

About a week and a half ago three young cows were shot and killed in a pasture about half a mile from where the horses were shot.

Hook says a .22-caliber gun was used in both cases, and he thinks they're related.

"Be Kind to Animals" week

The first week of May is "Be Kind to Animals" week. What are you doing this week to celebrate? Need some ideas?

Call your local animal shelter and offer to volunteer. They ALWAYS need help. If you don't have time in your schedule to volunteer consider a monetary donation. Many shelters also provide lists of needed supplies on their web sites. Don't know where the shelters are in North Dakota? Take a look at the links on the right!

Consider buying cruelty-free products.

Get to know your neighbors and introduce your pets to them and vice versa. If someone's pet unintentionally gets loose, neighbors may recognize the pet and return him/her safely back home.

Contact your local officials and state legislators to support strides in animal welfare. We definitely need better laws in ND.

And of course, the obvious, treat your companion animals with love and respect! Provide them with the proper care and companionship they deserve. Make an extra effort to spend more time with them. You have all sorts of activities in your life. They only have you.

Plato in Fargo

So the staff at the shelter took me in. All I have known my whole life is the family I had, so seeing all these new people has really scared me. Engrossment for SB 2365 Defeated in House

The House Agriculture Committee recommended a DO NOT PASS for the engrossed SB 2365 and this past Friday the majority of the House of Representatives voted the same.

This is disheartening and frustrating but we have to keep moving forward. We must have faith that at some point in the future we will have a majority of State Senators and Representatives who acknowledge the high ethical standards of North Dakotans that is inherent in our nature. We are capable of providing protection to humans as well as animals. We are also independent in nature and need not fear that national animal welfare groups (which, for the record, are not “conspiring arms of PETA”) will take advantage of a stricter law by making unwarranted claims.

Is it not logical to take into account that all agriculture practices are (and would have continued to be…) exempt from the animal cruelty law? Regardless, if our farm animals are being cared for, as many farm organizations cited they are doing, then why is there fear of being charged with animal neglect and cruelty?

SB 2365: The Animals Need Your Help!

Dear pet lovers in the state of North Dakota,

If you are not already aware of this, a bill, SB 2365, was sponsored to update the current animal cruelty laws in our state. The Senate Agriculture Committee did not pass the bill but instead created an amendment to study the bill during the interim.

I attended the Senate Agriculture Committee hearing and some of the organizations who were initially involved in rewriting the law did not want the bill to pass because sections were added that they had not discussed. If this is the case, I completely understand why they wouldn't want the bill to pass at this time. However, they did discuss the proposed changes to the penalty section and all agreed on this. The Senate Agriculture Committee asked these individuals if they would be ok with only passing the felony section while the rest of the bill was studied during the interim. They all said YES.

Changes to wording of this section cites, "A class C felony for a second or subsequent offense within five years." Talk to anyone working at an animal shelter in our state and you'll hear about their experiences with abused cats and dogs, including the rescue efforts of dogs at the puppy mill in Scranton in 2010. Note: The law as worded in the bill, as with the current law, DOES NOT APPLY to production of livestock and lawful hunting/trapping/fishing.

Last week the bill crossed over to the House of Representatives. We have a window of opportunity to let our voices be heard!

If you want to make a BIG difference in the lives of pets in North Dakota, tell the state representatives and members of the House Agriculture Committee that you support passing the penalty section of SB 2365 during this legislative session while the rest of the bill is studied during the interim.

Letting your voices be heard is EASY: call 1-888-635-3447 to leave a message on your views about this bill. The person assisting you will even look up your district for you and get the message to the appropriate people! Ask that your message be shared not only with the representative from your district but all House representatives. If you can't get through just keep trying!

Pets as Christmas Gifts? BAD IDEA!

Tis the time of year when parents and grandparents think they should get their cute little children cute little pets. I'm here to tell you that this is an awful idea. I bring this up every year during the holidays. It's still a widespread problem so I will bring it up again...

Why you shouldn't buy puppies/kittens for children during the holidays:

Pets should never be an impulse purchase. There's more to an animal than his/her looks. What about breed and temperament. You also need to think about your own environment: Do you have the space? Time to properly take care of the animal? Give the attention and love s/he deserves? Time for providing playtime and exercise? Funds for ongoing costs: food, vet bills?

Pets are not merely play things. They are living beings with feelings, needs and emotions. If children are given pets as a gift they may view it in the same category as a doll or toy train with batteries. A pet does not run out of energy like a battery run toy nor does it enjoy being thrown around like a doll.

Unfortunately, this results in the excitement wearing off after the holidays have passed. The family is busy with other things and there's no time to care for or properly train the pet. This results in behavioral problems for the pet. The family thinks they have an unruly pet...newsflash: IT'S YOUR FAULT!

This results in the pet being taken to the local shelter. If the pet is lucky, s/he might find a loving family. Or, if the shelter is overflowing with animals and the shelter is not a no-kill shelter, the pet will be euthanized.

I realize that people who are in the "spirit of Christmas" and want to buy a pet as a gift won't be taking the time to research the subject and will not see this post. But, maybe some of you who are animal lovers and agree with what I'm saying will pass this along to others.

Here are some alternatives that will keep the children and pets happy:

Get a Zuh Zuh pet! They are adorable and cuddly. They each have their own personality and vocabulary. The best thing of all is that when the child gets bored with it the pet won't care! Personally, I like Mr. Squiggles.
If the child has a gaming system, get a game with animals: Animal Planet: Vet Life, SimAnimals, Farm Frenzy: Animal Country, Doctor Fizzwizzle's Animal Rescue...
Buy dog and cat treats, take your child to the local animal shelter and have the child donate the treats. This illustrates the true meaning of the holidays and benefits both the child and the animals. This might start a conversation on the importance of responsibility in having a pet in the family.

Remember-if you do decide to add a pet to your family:

Don't do it during the holidays!
Do your research

Make sure every family member takes part in the process and cares for the pet after s/he is part of the family

Don't buy a pet from a store. Pets from stores usually come from puppy mills. Puppy mills are evil!

Check out your local animal shelter. If the shelter doesn't have a dog/cat that matches your needs/the pets needs don't adopt at that time. Be patient. Make trips to the shelter on a regular basis to meet new animals until you find the right match for your family.

He and his brothers and sisters came to the Central Dakota Human Society because they were an unwanted litter of puppies. Look at that smile! Brandy is living at the James River Humane Society in Jamestown. She's a large dog in her senior years.

Information from her bio on PetFinder: Brandy is a senior at about ten years old but she doesn't show it. Being an older gal that does require a few extra vet visits but for all the love this girl is going to give you it's worth it! She does have one small problem and that is she likes her opinion heard but if you tell her to be quiet she usually listens.

Dasher is a tri-color (black/brown/white) Sheltie who went missing 12/23/08 two miles south of Wahpeton, along the river. Dasher is wearing a collar with tags and is microchipped. Please do NOT chase him to try and catch him as that will just spook him from the area, but contact 701-730-5665 and 701-640-5031 (please leave message) with the exact time, date, and location of sighting, description of the dog seen, and the direction he was headed.

We have had sightings every day near where he was lost. We have not gotten close enough, for him to recognize us. We are not allowed to cross the river as the ice is unstable. Dasher is crossing back and forth. The nearest bridges we can cross are 3 miles in either direction. He is only about 15 pounds. REWARD for his safe return! Thank you so much for your help! He is dearly missed by his family.

It's winter... ice, snow and freezing cold temperatures. Now's the time to snuggle up in front of a fireplace with a warm kitty on your lap or a puppy at your feet. But before you settle down to your long winter's nap, take some time to learn how to keep those animals as warm and comfortable as you are.

Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes people forget that their pets are just as accustomed to the warm shelter of the indoors as they are. Some people will leave their animals outside for extended periods of time, thinking that all animals are adapted to live outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness.

Cassius Clay is such a sweet boy. He loves to play with other dogs and is a joy to have around. He was found running along the road and has suffered a fractured front leg. It is an old fracture and his leg has healed crooked. He is okay with it though and hopes you will be too.

If we tried to invent the cruelest punishment for dogs, we probably couldn't come up with anything worse than "solitary confinement" on a chain or in a kennel. Dogs are pack animals that crave companionship. Most people who chain dogs just don't realize that scratches behind the ears, games of Fetch and walks around the block mean to world to dogs. Time spent inside with their families and curling up at our feet while we watch TV is their idea of heaven. Many dogs left to fend for themselves at the end of a chain fall prey to attacks by other animals or cruel people, and many others are injured or hanged or choke as a result of getting entangled or caught in their tether.

GF Dog Park

I've been hearing some great things about the new dog park in Grand Forks from friends who live in the area. Their dogs love the exercise and the opportunity to socialize with other dogs. I've heard a couple negative comments, too. Some owners don't keep an eye on their dogs.

The dog park will only be as good as the people who bring their dogs. Dog owners should make sure their dogs are behaving appropriately and that their waste is picked up and properly disposed of. I'm sure most dog owners observe the rules. It only takes a few "rule breakers" to give the park a bad reputation.

I can only speak from my experiences at the dog park here in Bismarck. Overall, the dog owners are very responsible. However, if there's a dog owner who does not take action when their dog is being aggressive or doesn't pick up after their dog, the other dog owners are always quick to speak up and say something to the owner.

Maybe if the responsible dog owners who frequent the park in Grand Forks did this the irresponsible owners will get the hint and start following the rules.

GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. - Being deployed overseas to fight the War on Terror gives purpose to the hours of training as there becomes a mission to expedite - even for furry, four-legged dogs.

This week Staff Sgt. Christopher Bradford and his explosive control dog, Fendy, will deploy in support of the Iraq war. Fendy, a Belgium Malinois, carefully listens with perked ears to the assertive, yet reserved voice commands of Bradford.

Trained to identify explosive devices, Fendy will conduct gate and convoy sweeps, said Bradford. Once an explosive is found, the dog will sit awaiting the notice of the handler. The method in which explosive control dogs find their target remains undisclosed.

Military dogs are extremely useful and an invaluable tool, said Jeff Cariveau, Grand Forks Air Force Base kennel master.

“Other mechanical devices are used to search for explosives, but are not near as effective,” Cariveau said.

Cariveau continues to explain the difficulty of working dogs in the desert, battling 130 degree August temperatures. The dogs are equipped with booties, keeping bare paws from burning. Also, air-conditioned vehicles and kennels help keep the dogs from overheating. As Bradford and Fendy arrive in the Middle East to work with an Army unit, they will have an opportunity to execute the drills they've practiced for the past three years. Integration of veterinarians, handlers and dogs among differing military branches is common because of the combined training effort encompassing the working dogs.
Like most military working dogs, Fendy's trained to attack, too.

“The dogs are trained to attack on command, and command only; unless a handler is being harmed,” Cariveau said. Fendy is one of eight total military working dogs at Grand Forks Air Force Base; seven are trained to recognize explosives and one for narcotics. Each dog is paired with a handler and, unless deployed, the dogs will remain at the base, even if the handler is relocated. Within the 319th Security Force's squadron's Military Working Dog unit are eight handlers, a trainer and a kennel master.

Members of security forces can volunteer to be dog handlers and attend a school that will prepare them to train their dog.

Initial military dog training is conducted at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, regardless of the service branch to which the dog and handler belong.
“Two new members are waiting for training,” Cariveau said.

Once the new members are trained and paired with a dog, the total number of pairs at Grand Forks Air Force Base will be 10.

The most common breeds are German Shepherds and Belgium Malinois because of the dogs' ability to be trained and for attacking.

Avar, a 9-year-old German Shepherd and handler, Staff Sgt. David Helmbrecht soon will be deployed to Southwest Asia. Another pair soon to leave is Staff Sgt. Mark Ochoa and Borek, a 3-year-old mixed-breed dog.“We have a minimum of one (pair) deployed at any time,” Cariveau said. “Since 9/11, the need for (trained) dogs has increased.”

Although other animals and pets are on base, the military working dogs account for the most activity at the 319th Air Refueling Wing Veterinary clinic.
Dr. Jaspreet Gill and Army Specialist Heather Aguas conduct six-month checkups on the military dogs and are constantly available to service the needs of the dogs.

Currently, the clinic is unable to do surgery, but plans to have that option in 2008. Otherwise, Gill and Aguas, a veterinarian technician, examine and treat pets (including horses at the base stable), issue health certificates, conduct monthly inspections, administer vaccinations and do lab work.

As the military dogs become older, they are checked for typical issues within their breed. Common with German shepherds is arthritis and hip dysplasia, Aguas said. Once a dog is unable to physically perform the necessary commands, it is retired from service and becomes available for adoption.

“Most of the dogs are adopted by the handlers,” Cariveau said.

Animal Pound in Bismarck

Though it will cost more than they originally expected, the Bismarck City Commission gave approval for construction of a new animal control center.

Commissioners unanimously approved an expenditure of $419,600 for the impound at Tuesday's meeting. The city took over the formerly privately held Pet Connection Humane Society well over a year ago. Pet Connection had been unable to meet its budget and was forced to turn the operations over to the city, which had contracted with the organization as the city animal impound.

The city commission had put aside $300,000 for construction of a new facility, but Police Chief Deb Ness later found the new building along with utilities would come in much higher. Bismarck did work out an agreement with the city of Mandan to provide impound services. Mandan will provide $75,000 for the facility along with paying $14 per day per animal it brings to the pound and up to 25 percent or $750 a month toward utilities.

Ness recommended that construction contracts be awarded to Capital City Construction as the general contractor; HA Thompson & Sons for mechanical work; and Electrical Systems for electrical work. Total costs of the contracts come to $419,600.With Bismarck's budgeted $300,000 and Mandan's $75,000, the project still came up $44,600 short.

Commissioner Sandi Tabor indicated the additional funds could come from the city's general fund.Ness reported that the owner of the building that the city currently uses as an impound is willing to extend the contract with the city until April of 2008 and will negotiate further time if necessary.Commissioners did question the need for a garage for the facility.

Ness explained that during the winter, it will be easier to unload animal in a garage. In cold, slippery conditions, it may be easier for animals to escape, and if they did they would still be within the confines of the garage. Further, the garage will provide storage for food and other materials needed to house the animals.Tabor made the motion to accept the recommended bids, which passed 5-0.

Millie and Buster

Meet Millie and Buster, mother and son. They are in a foster home right now and available for adoption, to the right home, through Adopt-a-Pet in Fargo. Information from Adopt-a-Pet's web site:

Millie and Buster are a mother and son team. Millie is about 3 ½ years (16 pounds) and Buster is approximately 3 months old (7 pounds). They are Poodle/Terrier mix possibly with Maltese or Lhasa Apso. Both are current on their shots and on heartworm. Millie has possibly had a few batches of puppies, and has not been spayed yet. She will need to be spayed by end of August. Buster will need to be neutered in October.

Both dogs love people and have a quiet temperament. Millie is submissive but protective of Buster. She loves to be held like a baby with her tummy scratched. Buster is very energetic and is learning to play fetch. They are both learning how to interact with other dogs and cats and are doing well. They’ve had limited interaction with children but have done fine. They are only kenneled at night, and do well when kenneled together. They are left in a large entry during the day with access to a dog door and large fenced yard, and don't have any accidents in the house. However, Buster does have occasional accidents in the evening when having the run of the house. They will both need continued patience and commitment working with house training.

It would be best if Millie and Buster would be adopted together. Buster is VERY attached to Millie. Buster is constantly curled up sleeping with Millie or following her around. He definitely prefers having a canine companion, and because of that and his energy level, his new forever home will be a more enjoyable experience if Buster has a constant playmate.

Millie and Buster's foster home are much attached and want the perfect dog lover home for these two.

I was searching on the Weather Channel web site to get the latest forecasts and was pleasantly surprised to find pet related articles on their home page. The main article is about keeping pets out of the heat. They offer some good tips, too:

"Never leave your pet in the car. Though it may seem cool outside, the sun can raise the temperature inside your car to 120 degrees Fahrenheit in a matter of minutes, even with the windows rolled down. If you need to run some errands, leave the furry ones at home."

Living with MS...Dog In Hand

There was a great story on KFYR-TV about a woman with MS and her dog helper/friend.

A Drake woman is tackling Multiple Sclerosis, or M-S, with a furry friend. Sandy Sherlock is a music teacher at the Towner school, and she`s using a service dog named Eddie to help her balance while walking. She says she`s utilizing her gift of public speaking to raise awareness about M-S, how service dogs are a viable option, and as a way to raise funds to support Eddie and fight M-S.

Rabbits in Fargo

Adopt-a-Pet of Fargo-Moorhead has a few rabbits in need of homes. The rabbit in the photo in Karmel. Some specs on Karmel: is almost 2-years-old, is a neutered male and weighs 5lbs. He had an ear infection that caused a head tilt, but has been getting better, and his tilt is hardly noticeable. However the tilt never slowed him down or stopped him from climbing, he just needs to be handled VERY carefully. He is EXTREMELY active. Needs lots of time out of his cage running, he will wear you out just watching him have fun exploring hissurroundings and climbing all over you. He is a very social rabbit. Is litter box trained inside his cage. Would do best in a home as an only rabbit. Because of his head tilt, he would not be good in a home with small children.

If you are not in a position to welcome a rabbit into your home, consider donating any of the following to Adopt-a-Pet:

* Hard plastic baby toys or other bunny-safe toys (new or used).

Apple Creek in Bismarck Closes

Leonard Moos, owner of Bismarck’s Apple Creek Kennel for 38 years, had his dogs taken from him over the weekend. The 83 golden retrievers — including 37 puppies that were bred to be sold to a pet broker in Kansas — were removed from Moos’ care because of alleged code violations. A Minnesota shelter that is caring for the dogs called the kennel a puppy mill, but Moos said he was just too old and too slow and was falling behind. The problems, including improper cleaning of the kennel runs and lack of straw in the runs, were noticed at a routine inspection last week.

After the inspection, the USDA contacted Retrieve a Golden of Minnesota, a small organization that takes in surrendered or found goldens and finds them new homes. RAGOM came to Bismarck on Saturday to collect the dogs. It was the largest one-time rescue for the group, and it solicited help from the Animal Ark Shelter. The dogs were taken to Hastings, where volunteers worked into the early morning hours Sunday to unload the animals and take care of them.The dogs were washed and fed, and those that needed medical attention were cared for right away, Fry said. Again, Jirsa-Smith was unavailable to comment on the alleged physical maladies.

Temporary homes were found for the dogs, but many of them still need permanent homes. Monetary donations would also be welcome; according to RAGOM, the veterinary bills for the 83 dogs will likely top $25,000.

Pet Food Recall

NEW YORK, March 23, 2007—Based on new reports issued by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets that rodent poison was found in laboratory testing of the tainted pet food recalled last week, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), through its Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), has the following information to provide to the public: Aminopterin, a toxin found in some rodenticides available outside the USA, is a folic acid antagonist, i.e. it disrupts the body’s ability to utilize folic acid. In animals, this can result in loss of appetite, diarrhea and weight loss. It may also cause leucopenia, which is a reduction in white blood cells, as well as birth defects.

Aminopterin is closely related in chemical structure and mechanism to a drug called methotrexate, which is used to treat some cancers, both in humans and animals. Renal failure has been reported in human patients receiving methotrexate. We do not know if aminopterin can cause renal failure in pets.

Dogs in GF Need Home

Recently two dogs (litter mates) were brought to Stay and Play Resort in Grand Forks. The "owner" never picked them up! Now, the owner of Stay and Play is trying to find a home for the two dogs. The owner says the dogs are a husky/shepherd mix, around 6 months old. If possible she'd like to keep the two dogs together. They are great dogs, very gentle, loving and play well with other dogs too!!! Animal Cruelty Bill

As you are probably aware, the ND 60th Legislative Assembly is session. One of the bills, 1421, deals with animal cruelty. If you haven't already seen it CLICK HERE.

This bill will add two new sections, some amendments and some reenactment to sections of chapter 36 of the ND Century Code.

One area of this bill that troubles me is the section that reads:

"Cruelty" or "torture" includes every means any act, omission, or neglect whereby
unnecessary or unjustifiable pain, suffering, or death is caused or permitted. The
term does not include:
a. Any activity that requires a license or permit under chapter 20.1-03;
b. Any activity that is usual and customary practice in production agriculture;
c.Any show, fair, competition, performance, or parade;
d. A rodeo;
e. A wagon or buggy ride;
f. Trail or pleasure riding; or
g. Any activity that involves the training or teaching of animals.

The way I see it, if someone is torturing animals or treating them in a cruel way that person should be punished. This bill says that if someone tortures an animal at a rodeo, fair or during training this wouldn't be considered cruel or against the law. Why? This is wrong and unethical.

1/23/2007 - New statistics show large need for pet rescue in F-M areaNew figures from the animal pounds in Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo show that about 600 cats and 100 dogs were euthanized at local pounds in 2006. The good news in these figures is that while more animals came into the pounds in 2006, a smaller percentage were euthanized. The local pound statistics in detail [from years 2006, 2005]:

Total cats euthanized at the local pounds: 2006: 574; 2005: 697

I read this great story in the newspaper today. I found it on Mankato Free Press online, and thought I'd share. Two boys in St. Peter, MN found a duck frozen in a pond and saved it!

Quacking the Ice: High Schoolers Help Waterfowl Duck Death by Robb Murray, Mankato Free Press, published December 17, 2006.

Eric Aspelund and Chris Hoffman, both juniors at St. Peter High School, decided Dec. 2 was a good day for ice fishing, so they went to Hallett’s Pond and began testing the ice. As you probably already have guessed, they came upon a Ruddy duck, stuck frozen in the ice, but still alive. “We thought it was a rock,” Aspelund said. “We got closer, and it was a duck.” The boys say the duck made feeble attempts to defend itself, but the boys were able to use a pocket knife to chip it out of its icy incarceration. Hoffman held the duck in his arms while they took it back to his house. “I thought it would be pretty cool just to let the animal live again,” Hoffman said. Once at Hoffman’s house, they filled a bathtub with lukewarm water and put the duck inside. They fed minnows to the duck, and in about three or four hours, it started coming around. “He started getting pretty lively, I guess you could say,” Aspelund said. When the duck seemed ready to head back outside, they took it to Mill Pond, the one just behind the police station and city offices, which is about five blocks from Hoffman’s house. Right away the duck started swimming around and flapping its wings. “I’m a hunter. I’ve seen these ducks a lot. From its movement, I thought it looked normal,” Aspelund said. They went back to that pond for a few days to make sure the duck was OK. The last time they saw it was Dec. 4. Alan Aspelund, Eric’s father, says he wasn’t surprised at what the boys did. They both have a healthy respect for, and knowledge of, animals. “In my opinion, these two kids do a lot of neat things,” dad said. “Every Halloween, they used to get pumpkins and feed them to deer ...
